| New York City police officers Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora were not yet 30 when they were gunned down in the line of duty this month. But their legacies will be deep and lasting. According to Post columnist Kathleen Parker, that was the feeling inspired by Rivera's moving funeral on Friday. The details of Rivera's life and the testimony of those who knew and loved him, Parker writes, speak to "the essential goodness that undergirds our aspirations and the willingness of so many to offer their lives in service to others." Newly inaugurated Mayor Eric Adams, himself a 22-year veteran of the NYPD, called the moment "biblical" — coming as it does amid both rising crime rates and a sustained push to reform policing. Both of those things surely matter greatly. But as they are addressed, Parker sees grave danger in allowing politics to shred our bonds with those who live their oaths to protect and serve. She also sees a possible bridge across division in the service and sacrifice of officers like Rivera and Mora. (Spencer Platt/Getty Images) Officers Rivera and Mora: We need more of them, not less.
